In the good old folktale tradition, we didn't read but heard this tale
from Nicholas Blanton of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, USA.
It was adapted by Valerie Loomer into The Blacksmith's Fiddle,
with help from Alain Ayme who made sure that we didn't lose the essence
of the original story.
Alain also made the puppets with Valerie. They are : Pete the sheriff,
Lucifer (small version) Willy, 1st devil kid, and Chuck,
2nd devil kid. Their sizes range from 50 to 145 cm in height.
There is one masked character : Lucifer (large version). Alain
made the mask.
Polo Burguière built the set, the « forge-bellows drone-a-thon
», the « anvil-dulcimer », and is our master of mini
explosions.
Polo Burguière is Joe, the blacksmith. He
plays oldtime fiddle throughout the show.
Valerie manipulates the puppets, is Mabel, Joe's
wife, the large masked Lucifer,
and plays harmonica, vocals, washboard, stepdancing, hair sticks, «
forge-bellows-drone-a-thon », washtub bass, « anvil-dulcimer
», spoons and banjo.
